KeNako SA Boys U12’s Comes to George

Ron Boon, Chairman of the KeNako Academy, has announced that the KeNako Academy is sponsoring the SA Boys U12 Nationals for 2011.  In announcing KeNako’s involvement in the event, Ron said “This is an exciting event for KeNako Academy and the town of George to be hosting.  The KeNako SA Boys U12’s will see many families from all parts of the country travelling to George for the week of the tournament.  In these tough economic times such events make a difference to George, not to mention the fact that for many families it may well be their first visit to George and the Eden District region, so hopefully they will enjoy a great experience that will bring them back to George in the future.  The KeNako SA Boys U12’s will host the majority of South Africa’s young golfing talents.  These are the players of the future and with golf being accepted as an Olympic sport from 2016 we can expect some of these boys to be representing South Africa at global events such as the Olympic Games in years to come.

16 Different teams of 6 boys per team play in the Nationals, a total of 96 young golfing talents.  The KeNako SA Boys U12’s are to be played at the Kingswood Golf Estate, across the road from the KeNako Academy, from 2nd to 5th October 2011.   The tournament includes both a team challenge and an individual competition.  The boys play a practice round and then 54 holes of medal strokeplay, a tough ask but a wonderful learning experience for the young golfers.  The tournament format for the team competition is that the best 5 scores count per round, with the worst individual score being dropped from the total team score each day.  The individual competition simply sees the player with the lowest score over the 54 holes winning the Individual U12 national title.

Provinces select their players from the Order of Merit system that functions in each province throughout the course of the year, so ensuring that the best talents are selected for the different teams.  For many of the young golfers competing at this level, this will be the first national competition they will have played in, truly a daunting but exhilarating experience for golfers so young!  The quality of golf improves dramatically from this age and life-long friendships are often forged at such events.

The Protea Hotel King George will become the tournament village where most of the players and their families will stay for the duration of the tournament.  The 16 teams that will be playing in the tournament and travelling to George in October include teams from Southern Cape, Western Province, Western Province B, Boland, Eastern Province, Border, Free State / Northern Cape, KwaZulu Natal, Central Gauteng, Central Gauteng B, Gauteng North, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, North West and Little Kids Golf.

Anton Nel, President of Junior Golf in the Southern Cape, who together with the KeNako Academy are the official hosts of the events, said “The Southern Cape is very proud and privileged to be hosting the KeNako SA Boys U12’s tournament.  Our thanks go to SAGA for their support in allocating the tournament to our province.  It is going to be wonderful to see all these young golfers coming together and embracing the game with such vigour and determination.  For some it is incredibly daunting, and many a tear is shed, but for all it is an experience that ignites a desire for the game of golf.  Thanks are also due to the KeNako Academy for ensuring that the Southern Cape is able to put on an event of this magnitude.  We would like to encourage the people of George to come to the tournament to see how the youngsters play the game.  We also require volunteers willing to walk 18 holes with the each young fourball so if anybody out there is willing and able to assist we will be grateful for such assistance.” Anybody interested and able to assist as a volunteer can contact Nadia at the KeNako Academy 044 8740370.
