15 Year Olds Dominate Kingswood Club Championships

The first 3 places in the Kingswood Club Championships were taken by 3 very promising young 15 year old boys.

Jovan Rebula who has been dominating his age group in South Africa, won with an outstanding score of 139 after shooting rounds of 70 and 69, 5 under par for the 36 holes.  Jovan is the nephew of Ernie Els and in many respects he is just like Ernie was as a young boy.  Congratulations to Jovan on his fine victory!

The next 5 places on the leaderboard were filled by KeNako students.  Cameron Moralee shot an outstanding 5 under par 67 on day 2 to follow up his first round 73 and when he birdied the final hole on day 2 Jovan had to make a pressure putt of 4 foot to secure victory.  Cameron has shown immense improvement since joining KeNako Academy at the beginning of 2012 and he has the temperament and ability to become a champion golfer.

In third place was Aidan Boon who shared the lead at 2 under par after day 1 and Aidan followed this up with an even par 72 on day 2.  This is Aidan’s best ever 36 hole performance and he too is showing signs of steady improvement after going through something of a lull for the past few months.

From a KeNako perspective it is interesting watching the students progress as they live through their years of puberty.  There can be little doubt that growth spurts and changes in the make-up of their body’s negatively impact progress in golf.  The students themselves are unaware of this situation and sometimes get down on themselves when their golf game is not at its best.  It is therefore rewarding to see the excitement and thrill when the months of hard work, often through some tough times, pays off and they achieve results such as those that were achieved this past weekend.

All of the top 3 finishers at the 2012 Kingswood Club Championships, Jovan, Cameron and Aidan, turned 15 this year, so this truly is a remarkable achievement.  There cannot be too many Club Championships that have been played anywhere in the world where three 15 year olds have all shot under par and been 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the Championship!

The next 3 positions were also filled by KeNako students.  Garen Niemand followed up a first round 76 with an excellent 69 in round 2 to finish in 4th position.  In 5th and 6th were two boys who scored career best 36 hole totals.  Franklin Manchest was 5th with rounds of 74 and 75 and Jabulane Mabilane came 6th with rounds of 76 and 75.  It’s hard to believe, but both Jabulane and Franklin are also just 15 years old which means that there were five 15 year olds and 17 year old Garen Niemand in the top 6 positions!!!  These were all outstanding performance on a demanding golf course.

In the Ladies Division Charnay Williams continued her steady progress and missed getting into a play off by just one shot.  Charnay was counted out for 2nd and ultimately finished in 3rd place, a commendable achievement for yet another 15 year old!

Congratulations to all who played and well done to Kingswood Golf Estate on hosting an excellent and very successful Club Championships.
