KeNako SA World Juniors off to a Flying Start!

Some glorious George weather greeted guests at the KeNako SA World Juniors on Sunday. Not all players and guests had arrived in George by Sunday morning, but guests from many countries of the world were in George and joined the Am-Am and the after golf festivities. For most of the junior players it was a first look at the Kingswood Golf Course and their relaxed practice round would have contributed enormously to their acclimatisation process to George. Some of the players from Europe were coming from freezing conditions and they were immediately exposed to the hot African sun so it must have been something of a shock to their systems!

Local businessmen Peter Moolman and Terry Dimatellis played with Csilla Rozsa, a young lady from Hungary and Samuel Schiff from Switzerland. They were runaway winners of the Fourball Alliance Competition, winning by 6 Stableford points with an excellent score of 95 points. Csilla had flown in from the USA on Saturday and she was understandably jet-lagged, but Samuel has been training at the KeNako Academy for over 2 weeks in preparation for the tournament and his excellent play reflected his first-rate preparation. It is interesting to note that whilst at KeNako Samuel has also been working with KeNako’s education experts to improve his English.

The team of Roger Wessels, father Brent Hammond and his son Damian Hammond from Swaziland and Patrick Murray from Austria came second. Despite being only an occasional golfer Roger, Head Professional at the KeNako Academy, still managed to shoot a 67 and contribute to his team’s performance. The story relating to Patrick Murray of Austria is an interesting one. Patrick has an Irish father and an Austrian mother. He was born in Brazil, went to school in Miami USA and now plays golf for Austria!

Taylormade set up a special facility on the 1st Tee and all players were invited to hit their drives with a choice of the new range of Taylormade equipment. Taylormade kindly sponsored the winning Am-Am prizes and it was good to have representatives of the Patron of the KeNako SA World Juniors, Retief Goosen, promoting the Goosen wine range at the after golf lunch and prize giving function.

The President of the World Junior Golf Series, Dr Susanna Rosswag, together with her family arrived in George on Saturday. The tournament in South Africa has become a special annual excursion for the Rosswag family and they enjoy exploring and tasting the delights of George and the surrounding areas. The immediate past President of the WJGS and current Vice-President Tom Burnett arrived from the USA on Monday.
