KeNako students returned to George the day prior to the first Junior Tournament of the year and proceed to fill the first 3 positions on the Leaderboard, with Alan Lones tying South Africa’s second ranked junior golfer Jovan Rebula in 4th Place. What an amazing result for KeNako Academy to start the year 2014!
Caylum Boon had enjoyed an excellent result on the previous day at the Oubaai Open when he had just failed to win the title, finishing at level par for the 36 holes and failing by only one shot to beat the Southern Cape’s top golfer, Nicholas Mitchell. He continued with his outstanding start to the year and shot a career best round of 4 under par 68 to tie fellow KeNako student, Franklin Manchest. Caylum had got off to a poor start and was 2 over par after 3 holes but he rallied and scored 6 under par for the remaining 15 holes to shoot his superb score.
Unlike Caylum, 15 Year old Franklin Manchest had enjoyed a flying start to his round and his card read 5 under par through 14 holes. After parring 15 and 16 Franklin dropped a shot at the tough par 3 17th hole before paring the equally tough par 4 18th hole to set up a play-off with his friend and peer, Caylum. The 68 scored by Franklin is also his best career round.
The two boys started the play-off at hole 1 and as he had done earlier in the day, Caylum 3 putted the first green to hand the title to Franklin. Franklin had left his approach to the green just short but he then almost holed his chip, leaving his ball just a couple of feet from the pin.
It was pleasing to see 3rd placed Malcolm Flanegan enjoying his best ever round since joining the KeNako Academy mid-2013. Malcolm’s mother, who had travelled down from the Free State to bring her son back to KeNako Academy the previous day, walked with her son and it was great to see Mum and son being able to enjoy such a good round. Malcolm finished very strongly, birdieing the last 3 holes to finish his round.
KeNako’s success on the day did not end with the A Division. 16 Year old Charnay Williams, who had just returned from a successful women’s tournament in Cape Town, was the top girl and also second in the gross section of the B Division. Big things are expected of Charnay in 2014!
