The Rundle College first team won the KeNako Schools Golf Festival for the first time by a whopping 17 strokes from last year’s winners Punt Hoërskool, with Paarl Gymnasium finishing in a tie for third place with the Rundle College second team. All of the Rundle College team are students at KeNako Academy. The Rundle College first team comprised Caylum Boon, Alan Lones, Franklin Manchest and Cameron Moralee. Several of South Africa’s top junior players represent their schools at the KeNako Schools Festival, so the quality of golf is excellent. The team format sees the top three scores counting towards the team total each day. Three of the top five individual positions were filled by Rundle College first team players, with Cameron Moralee tieing with Cyril Botha from Punt Hoërskool as the top individual players.
In the Stableford Division Paarl Gymnasium’s Stableford Team won the tournament by 10 points from Parel Vallei, with St Dunstan’s College from Johannesburg finishing third.
Unfortunately the tournament was marred by bad weather. Day one at Kingswood Golf Estate was eventually abandoned due to high winds and day two at Oubaai Golf Resort was interrupted by rain and a lightning storm – for many local residents seeing a Highveld type thunder and lightning storm was a first time experience! Fortunately day three played at the George Golf Club was played with no weather interference.
The KeNako Schools Golf Festival is growing from strength to strength and effective 2015 every effort will be made to block the three golf courses used for the full day, which will allow KeNako Academy to accept entries from double the number of school teams.
