Rundle College Team Tie 1st and Lose Play-Off at SA High School Championships!

Rundle College was able to enter a team for the first time in the local Southern Cape Schools Division in 2013/14.  In previous years the students, all of whom attend KeNako Academy, were unable to play as a team for KeNako Academy because the academy is not a registered school, but the launch of Rundle College changed all of that!  The Rundle College team duly won the Southern Cape Division comfortably and qualified to play in the SA High School Championships finals, which is an officially sanctioned SAGA (South Africa Golf Association) tournament. The SA High School Championships finals are attended by the top 20 qualifying schools from all regions of South Africa and were hosted by the Bloemfontein Golf Club in Free State Province.  For the Rundle College boys the golf course was quite different when compared to what they are used to in the Southern Cape.  The course was very dry and bouncy although the greens were superb – receptive to a well struck shot; they had perfect speed and they rolled very well.

Teams consisted of four players and the format was a 36 hole medal tournament where the three best medal scores per day counted.  Rundle College was represented by Caylum Boon, Cameron Moralee, Alan Lones and Hayden Garcia and the Rundle College team were tied for the lead with Hilton College after day one.  The highlight of the day was a magnificent tournament career best score by Cameron Moralee of 7 under par 65 scored.  Day two proved to be a little tougher with tight pin placements and a swirling wind making scoring more difficult.  The day ended with Rundle College and TuksSport tied in first place.  A player from each of the winning teams was selected to play the playoff.  Cameron Moralee was selected to represent Rundle College and Marco Steyn, who recently won the  Northern Amateur Stroke Play, was selected from TuksSport.  On the first playoff hole Cameron unfortunately hooked his tee shot into the trees and then bunkered his punched approach shot and short sided himself.  Despite playing an excellent bunker shot he was unable to get up and down, losing to Marco’s par 4 which meant that TuksSport were the Team winners.

Cameron had a very good individual tournament and walked off with the individual honours shooting scores of 65 and 75 for a 4 under total of 140, winning by 5 shots.  Congratulations to TuksSport High School on their victory and thanks to SAGA for putting on this prestigious tournament.  The SA High School Championships was a great experience for the Rundle College and KeNako students and they look forward to competing in the regional Southern Cape Division and trying and earn the right to compete in next year’s finals and perhaps go one better!

Well played boys and keep up the good work.
