Carlo Kok and Roger Wessels Finish 1st and 2nd in Regional PGA Championships!

KeNako Academy Head Professional Roger Wessels is overdoing it on the golfing front!  A couple of weeks ago he played and won a tournament at St Francis Links and this past weekend he played again, together with fellow KeNako Professional Coach Carlo Kok, in the Regional PGA Championships.  This annual tournament was hosted by Fancourt where the professionals played the Outeniqua course on the first day and the Montagu course on day two of the tournament.

Apparently the courses were set up very tough – off the tips of the professional tees with tough pin positions, something of a challenge for the local region’s professionals, especially the older professionals (apologies Roger)!  Having said that, the much younger Carlo Kok showed his youth by winning the tournament from his Head Professional Roger – congratulations to Carlo on his excellent result!

Besides the extended length and the tough pin positions, the 21 professionals were confronted with windy conditions and very fast greens.  It certainly sounds like it was something of a Greenkeepers revenge challenge for the local professionals!  After day one Carlo and Roger were tied for the lead with Jade Tannous at 3 over par 75.  Carlo enjoyed an excellent day’s golf, hitting 16 of 18 greens and 13 of 14 fairways – some impressive statistics achieved by Carlo!  Unfortunately he managed to double bogey 2 holes which resulted in his 75.

On day two the players woke up to a perfect day – sunny with no wind.  Despite the excellent conditions, the tough Montagu course  then showed its teeth and the players were stretched to the limit off the back tees.  Roger had a poor front 9 and was 3 strokes behind Carlo and 2 behind Jade with 9 holes to play.  Roger fought back with a birdie at hole 10  and played much better on the back nine holes.  Coming down the final 18th  hole, which is a par 5,  Carlo had a two shot lead over Roger.  Carlo hit his second shot just over the green whilst Roger managed to hit his second shot to 15 feet, which put some pressure on Carlo since he had an eagle putt to tie Carlo if he was unable to make birdie.  Carlo responded admirably to the pressure and almost holed his eagle chip, which lipped out and finished 4 feet from the hole.  Roger duly sank his eagle putt and Carlo then made his 4 footer to beat Roger by a single stroke.

Congratulations to Carlo on his victory and well done to both Roger and Carlo on keeping the KeNako flag flying high.
