Roger Wessels Wins ‘Road Trip’ Tournament at St Francis Links

Every year the club professionals, golf director’s and coaches from the Eastern Cape and the Southern Cape get together to discuss industry norms, innovations and ideas.  The Southern and Eastern Cape AGM is held at the same time and this year the members were addressed by the Professional Golfers Association of SA CEO Ivano Ficalbi and heard that the PGA is in a healthy state and continuing to make an ever more positive impact on golf in South Africa.
KeNako Academy’s Head Professional, Roger Wessels, travelled to participate in the meetings and play in the ‘Road Trip’ tournament towards the end of July.  A 36 hole tournament forms part of the event and Roger led the field after day one with a level par round of 72.  He then improved on that with a 2 under 70 on day two (he had enjoyed some practice on day one!) to win on a very challenging golf course.  Some of the KeNako students played in a National Order of Merit tournament at St Francis Links a couple of month’s ago and they can attest to the difficulty of the golf course!  Roger, who represented South Africa at the World Cup of Golf in 1994 and who won 11 tournaments during his playing career, including the PGA Championship and the Canadian Masters, plays very little golf these days.  This makes his achievement in winning the ‘Road Trip’ all the more meritorious!

Roger thoroughly enjoyed the tournament and the feeling of being under pressure to win.  Jeff Clause, CEO at St Francis Links, once again put together a wonderful tournament for the golfers and it really is a destination where one has a fantastic experience.  Roger suggests that a visit to St Francis Links should be put on the to-do list of all keen golfers.  It is a fabulous Jack Nicklaus designed golf course built in a magnificent setting and if you have never had a hole in one then Roger says that the par 3 17th hole could well be your opportunity.  It is a huge green that feeds down to the back left quarter where the pin is generally located and Roger saw two hole-in-one’s made in last year’s event.

Congratulations to Roger from all at KeNako Academy on his fine victory!
