The National High School Championships were recently played at Irene Country Club in Pretoria and the Rundle College Team finished in a very creditable 4th place. Roger Wessels, who managed the team, sent through the following report.
A bitterly cold morning greeted the players for the first round where hot chocolate was more in demand than a practice ball on the range. The course played short due to the Highveld winter conditions but this tree lined course still presented a wonderful challenge for all the competitors. Getting used to the thin air, hard fairways and the distance the ball travels always takes an adjustment for youngsters going up from coastal conditions. This is not easy to do in a day and the fact that the boys were unable to get in a full practice round compounded the problem. Rundle College qualified for the event by winning the Southern Cape Schools League and were represented by Caylum Boon, Julien Sale, Franklin Manchest and Alan Lones.
The tournament was a medal competition with the three best individual scores in the team counting. The team lost a number of shots in the first days play due to simple errors which linked directly to the vastly different conditions and the team’s lack of knowledge about the course. Their performance was much improved in the second day where the combined team score was 1 over par for the best 3 players. We congratulate Hoër Skool Waterkloof on their victory.  It is perhaps of interest that the first three positions were taken by schools from Pretoria.
A great experience for the Rundle College and KeNako Academy students who thoroughly enjoyed playing this fantastic old Highveld golf course.
