Rundle College wins KeNako Schools Golf Festival for 3rd Time

The KeNako Schools Golf Festival, hosted for the 5th time, was once again very well received.  Thank you to all of the schools for travelling to George to play in this prestigious tournament.  The format remained the same – teams are made up of 4 players with the best 3 scores counting towards the team total every day.  The tournament is played over 54 holes and this year the teams played at Kingswood Golf Estate, Mossel Bay Golf Club and George Golf Club.  A special thank you to these Southern Cape golf clubs for continuing to host the KeNako Schools Golf Festival.

Teams from around South Africa once again travelled to George to participate in the Golf Festival. Paul Roos Gymnasium 1st Team from Stellenbosch finished second, with St. John’s College from Johannesburg taking third place, but it was a young Rundle College team that superceded expectations and won the Medal Trophy in the 2016 ‘edition’ of the KeNako Schools Golf Festival. The senior Rundle students were unavailable for selection this year which presented an opportunity for the new wave of younger players to show their worth and how well they performed!   Congratulations to Team Captain Charnay Williams and her young team-mates Jethro Newton, Calvin Maia and Antoine Sale on their outstanding result. Jethro finished 2nd in the Individual Standings, Calvin finished 4th, Antoine was 11th and Charnay 16th.  As a team they triumphed by 20 strokes.

One of the beauties of the KeNako Schools Golf Festival is that it allows schools and players with higher handicaps to participate in a Stableford Division.  This year the run-away winners of the Stableford Division were Suid Natal High School from Port Shepstone on the KwaZulu Natal South Coast with a fantastic score of 342 points, which means that the best 3 players averaged 114 points between then every day, 6 better than handicap.  The Trinity House 2nd Team (their 1st Team played in the Medal Division) were second in the Stableford Division, with Paarl Gymnasium from Paarl finishing 3rd.  Trinity House made the trip down from Johannesburg.

The winner of the Individual Prize was Luca Filippi from Milnerton High School.  Luca is one of South Africa’s top junior players and he played some exceptional golf, with rounds of 68 (Kingswood), 74 (Mossel Bay) and 65 (George GC) for a three round total of 207, 9 under par.  Fabulous golf!
